ABOUT SUSAN

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

- Thomas Merton

My creative mind kicked in early in life when my sister and I had a whole farm as our playground.  But it was the encouragement of my high school art teacher that led me to get my BA in art.  I taught middle and high school art for several years.  What a job!  I got to “play” all day with clay and drawing and painting!

I didn’t choose watercolor.  Watercolor chose me, lured me to art.  At first, portraits were a personal challenge…to convey a special quality of an individual person or animal.  I continue to explore ways to bring the subject to life.  Where portraits are like the “bread” of my work, experimenting with new techniques and subjects is like the delicious “sauces, jellies and jams” that add more interest.  Without variety, my work becomes stale.
